Independence Valley Road Race

Published by HPCCycling on 28 Mar 2016

We sent a small squad of Joel, Colin, and Stephen up to Washington for the Independence Valley Road Race. With a team of three and the Washington racers coming out in full force, our race strategy was to be as calm and patient as possible and make the final selection of racers. The 20 mile loop has two decisive climbs that usually break up the race.

Stephen was active in the beginning in the race covering moves and keeping the race together. Colin went into a five man break in the middle of the race that stayed away for nearly a lap, keeping the pressure off of Joel to chase. Coming into the last lap, the race was all together. Colin and Joel stayed with all the moves that went on the climbs and made the final selection of 25 or so riders after the final climb. With five miles left in the race, Joel counter attacked a move by Colin and quickly established a gap on the field. Kaler Marshall (Audi) bridged to Joel and the two worked to stay away to the finish. Joel was out-kicked at the line, and finished second to Kaler. David Richter (Metier Racing) finished 3rd on the day, winning the field sprint. After doing loads of work to keep the race together for Joel on the last lap, Colin finished 10th on the day.

This was a great result for our reduced squad. This coming weekend we will be at Gorge Roubaix as well as San Dimas Stage Race. Look for reports coming from both races.
