Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth: Gila Stage 1

Today's stage was 95 miles mostly flat to rolling until a final 6 mile climb. After the neutral start, the group took off hitting speeds of 50mph for the first few miles largely thanks to a very strong cross/tailwind and a slight downhill. This kept things largely together until it flatten out a bit. As the attacks started flying a small group got a fairly small but consistent gap. I recognized with such a small field (40 guys compared to last years 80+) and lack of teams that a field split could likely stick till the end.

Without a Paddle: It Smelled Bad During Vance Creek Road Race

Vance Creek is an 80-mile road race outside of Elma, Washington. It begins up on a hill near two never completed nuclear towers, before diving down, twisting around narrow farm roads, and then swooping up the hill again in a mile long climb and flattening out towards the finish line. The Pro/1/2 field does 6 laps of this... six times across the narrow twisting farm roads, six times up the leg-breaking climb.

Double Victories at the Gorge Roubaix

Stephen Bedford brought home an all day breakaway from the field on Saturday to take first place at the first day of the Gorge Roubaix. On Sunday, he rode a repeat performance nabbing a second W and securing the prized Gorge Roubaix jersey. Although Bedford would stand on top of the podium for both days, it was the efforts of the entire HCH-RPM Mortgage Elite Team that got him there.

Getting Wet and Dirty: Mason Lakes RR and Dirty Circles #2

Another weekend of wet Northwest early season racing has yielded a podium position to the HCH Elite Cycling Team. At the second race of the Dirty Circles series Aaron “the Coker Monster” Coker nabbed second place, while Josh Liberles followed closely behind in fourth. Both rode the majority of the race in a breakaway that launched halfway through the first lap of the masters 1/2/3 race. Meanwhile, back in the field, Ryan Jarrell, Robin Wessel and Patrick Palmer worked hard to control and cover attacks.

Bring the Rain: Echo Red to Red and Dirty Circles #1

It was a cold and miserable weekend for bike racing, but that rarely stops the motivated. HCH-RPM Mortgage riders were present at both the Echo Red to Red mountain bike race on Saturday and the first of the Dirty Circles series on Sunday. Both races were suffer fests and both provided a great kick off to the season.

Roasting Chestnuts at the Jack Frost TT

Chestnuts were roasted on an open fire and Jack Frost was doing a bit more than nipping at noses this past weekend, as some of the Northwest’s finest toed the line for the first Time Trial of the season. HCH/RPM Elite Racers Trevor Spahr and Josh Liberles got second and third respectively, behind Jamis-Hagens Berman U23 rider Colby Wait-Molyneux. Chris Bagg took fifth place.
